How To: choose beauty products wisely

In trying to clear the plaguing acne problems , I came to realise that there are certain product ingredients that are commonly used in our daily skincare products and should be avoided to prevent skin irritations. I must say that when I started to avoid these altogether, my skin is recovering faster and getting lesser breakouts!

1. Alcohol
When exposed to long term usage of products that contains alcohol, skin would be drying and irritated as it strips off moisture in our skin. Avoid cleansers, makeup removers, sunblocks or anything that contains alcohol (especially if it’s listed in the first 5 ingredients).

2. SLS/SLES
SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and SLES stands for Sodium Laureth Sulfate. They are foaming agents and therefore used widely in products that foams. These ingredients dissolves oil in our skin, therefore it is very drying and causes irritation.

3. Isopropyl myristate
Quote from wikipedia, “Isopropyl myristate is used in cosmetic and topical medicinal preparations where good absorption through the skin is desired.”

This ingredient is a synthetic oil that are often used as a moisturizing ingredient, but it can clog pores and cause skin irritation. Therefore it is considered to be comodogenic. Acne sufferers, please avoid it.

4. Isopropyl palmitate
Derived from palm oil and it maybe used as a binding agent or make the skin soft and smooth. But it can deprive skin from getting oxygen and clog pores! Also avoid anything that states “palmitate” as it is mildly irritating as well.

5. Myristyl myristate
It is a skin conditioning agent and gives products a white and glossy look. However it is listed as a strong human irritant and can cause breakouts.

Try to memorise all these chemical names and look carefully at the ingredients list when shopping for a new skincare product!

p/s: My apologies for flooding my blog with sponsored reviews and advertorials. Life isn’t as exciting recently as I’ve already graduated and staying home being an ultimate lazy bum. And due to the scholarship interviews, getting a job is not an option now because no one wants to hire someone who works for few months and quit because she is going overseas.

There will be more sponsored reviews for the time being so please bear with me! I’ll write more articles to compensate the lack of exciting activities going on in my life. 🙂
